Ysgol Gynradd Gymunedol Nantgaredig

Extra-curricular Activities

A great emphasis is placed by all school staff on extra curricular activities. All pupils from Year 1 onwards are encouraged to become members of Urdd Gobaith Cymru, which is the Welsh League of Youth. The Urdd offers various activities for its members from sporting activities to competing at Eisteddfodau in reciting, singing and dancing.

The school takes an active role in various sporting competitions, and again the pupils are encouraged to enjoy taking part in all events. Various concerts are held within school and the community. The pupils are frequently requested to perform at various fundraising events in the locality.

When in Year 5 and/or 6, pupils will be given an opportunity to go on a residential course at the Lady Stepney Residential Centre at Pendine. Pupils will travel down on a Monday and return on Friday. Teachers will accompany them.

There is a Cooking Club on Wednesday nights during the Spring and Summer terms for Year 4. Small groups take part at a time. Each child is told in advance when their slot is to come to the club. The focus of the clubs is to develop cooking skills and understanding of healthy eating in a fun and enjoyable way. We also encourage the use of local ingredients and sustainable cooking. All the food waste is composted.

This term so far the recipes have included:

Sprout Soup with cheesy croutons and walnut bread. (Made from the Christmas leftovers).

Turkey rissoles.

Lamb curry with lamb and leek samosas.

Daffodil cupcakes.

Sunshine Pasta salad

Hedgerow muffins (using Year 5’s home made jam and locally picked blackberries.)

White chocolate and raspberry cheesecake.

Rhubarb and strawberry smoothie.
